“It’s a lifestyle. More than just a diet because you have ethical reasons as well. Being conscious of what is happening in the animal world and you know the slaughtering of animals and farming and everything. There is obviously a huge impact as well on climate change that people maybe don’t talk about as much. It’s more than a performance for me. It’s a lifestyle. Something that I’m really proud of and hopefully that community grows.”

Nova Djokovic on The Game Changer
“Eating vegan makes me more aware of my body on the court… more alert. I removed toxins from my body, and with them went all the inflammation and other things that were messing with my energy levels.
As an athlete, the most important thing is to keep your energy levels consistent—especially as a tennis player, where you’re alone on the court for a best of five match. When playing for 3, 4, 5 hours straight, you need the right fuel… and for me, the right fuel is plant-based.”
The professional tennis player is also one of the executive producers behind the vegan documentary The Game Changers.
“The Game Changers is a new film executive produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jackie Chan that documents the explosive rise of plant-based eating in professional sports, mixing real-time, groundbreaking science with cinematic stories of struggle and triumph,” says the film’s description.
Speaking about the upcoming documentary, which hits more than 1,000 theaters across the world on September 16, Djokovic said: “It is about how this diet affects the world, not just personal health, but also sustainability, ecology, animals. This is what I care about so I’m really privileged to be part of that team.
Sundays with Just Tennis
What we eat is what makes us! As a tennis player there are a bunch of rules that need to be followed with regards to one’s intake and the interesting thing is that it’s not written in stone! What are these rules?
The rules state that you listen to your body, don’t try becoming Vegan because Djockovic has turned into one. Each player and their nutritional requirements are different. Celebrity diets are for magazines to make money off.
As Athletes it’s very important what you put into your system because you spend a lot of your time training your body to perform on a Tennis court. When that is the case, you need to eat foods that support the amount of work you do everyday , along with providing enough energy to tone and maintain the muscles that you gain when you train.
Specific Body Plant Based Diet
Each body is built differently and their requirements are also different, so do not generalise. Especially while catering to students at an academy, each student needs to be evaluated according to their physical requirements and be provided with food charts that match those specific requirements.
Work with professionals that have studied nutrition. Yes, as Athletes & coaches we are always conscious of what we eat and have learnt along the way, but it doesn’t hurt to seek the help of a Sports Nutrition Expert.
Lastly, in the current situation that we are in, it’s difficult for us to go out and play tennis, ensure the that you match your intake with your output to maintain that balance. Stay fit, stay, stay Safe!
